Dutch, Amsterdam-based guitarist Eelco van Zanten has realized a long-held dream with his new album, Eel Fusionkasteel: a whimsical title that translates to “Eel Fusion Castle” and hints at the (adventurous and explorational) musical journey within. This project is a testament to dedicated collaboration, with each of the fourteen tracks crafted to its full potential.

What immediately stands out is the album’s remarkable focus. Clocking in at just under 50 minutes, every piece is concise and purposeful. There is no aimless wandering; instead, the music is a continuous, high-energy thrill ride. This direct, efficient approach is a refreshing departure from the meandering style often found in fusion.

The band features an exceptional cast of players, including Nathaniel Klumperbeek on bass, Itai Weissman on EWI, and the superb Yoràn Vroom on drums. The musicians’ creative approach extends to their sonic choices as well. Weissman’s use of advanced software tools to shape his EWI sounds, combined with van Zanten’s synthesizer work, gives the album a fresh and modern sonic signature, moving beyond the traditional piano/organ textures.

Surprisingly, the drums were tracked last, a challenging process that speaks volumes about Vroom’s skill. His drumming is spectacular, expertly navigating the complex compositions and arrangements with ease. Van Zanten’s own performance on guitar and synth is equally impressive. He delivers solos that are inventive and consistently avoid the clichés that can plague contemporary fusion music.

While the entire album is a dynamic experience, the track “Tevoorschijn” is a particular highlight. It begins with a gentle, atmospheric opening, featuring spacious synth chords and an intricate melody. The piece then shifts gears into an African-inspired groove, with tasteful synthesizer harmonies and a Zawinul-esque solo, all propelled by Vroom’s outstanding drumming.

This is an album best experienced as a full, immersive journey. It’s an energetic, non-stop ride that speaks for itself through its masterful musicianship and sharp focus. The beautiful cover art, “Castle and Sun (1928)” by artist Paul Klee, is a fitting visual for this spectacular musical effort.
