A Masterclass in Timeless Virtuosity

De Meester, Almere, September 20, 2025

Text: Robin Boer

There’s something magical about seeing legends in an intimate setting. Saturday, September 20, the iconic Dutch prog-rock band Focus took the stage at De Meester, a cozy venue in Almere (and the hometown of their legendary drummer, Pierre van der Linden). The band’s history is as : formed in 1969, disbanded in 1978, and only officially revived in 2001 after decades of false starts and fleeting reunions. Since then, they’ve released five studio albums (alongside live records and compilations) and have been touring relentlessly, proving that their .

The current lineup is a powerhouse of talent: founder and composer Thijs van Leer on flute and organ, Menno Gootjes on guitar, Udo Pannekeet on bass, and, of course, Pierre van der Linden himself, whose drumming defined the band’s classic 1970s albums Focus II (Moving Waves) and Focus 3. Though he rejoined over two decades ago, his presence remains as vital as ever.

Billed as the Focus 12 tour, the setlist (un)surprisingly . Instead, the band delivered the same tried-and-true repertoire they’ve perfected over years of performances. For fans of their newer work, this might feel like a missed opportunity. Yet, it’s hard to fault them for leaning into the classics: songs like their breakthrough hit House of the King, the sprawling epic Eruption, and the unavoidable crowd-pleasers Sylvia and Hocus Pocus, which closed the first and second sets, respectively. These are the tracks that built their legacy, and hearing them live is a reminder of why they endure.

Three things become immediately clear at a Focus concert:

First, their performance is flawless: a masterclass in passion, virtuosity, and inspiration. Second, the band radiates pure joy in playing this music, night after night, decade after decade. And third, the sound (both onstage and in the room) is nothing short of spectacular, a testament to the expertise of their sound engineer, Geert “Geraldo” Scheijgrond.

Focus’ music is a seamless fusion of . Van Leer’s Hammond organ chords, layered with his , create a hypnotic introduction to Focus I and Hocus Pocus. Gootjes’ guitar work is nothing short of brilliant: adding his own signature touch while staying true to the original melodies and nuances. His solos in Focus 7 and the (from their acclaimed 1974 album Hamburger Concerto) were standout moments.

Just before the main set closer Hocus Pocus, drama struck: van der Linden’s bass drum pedal suddenly broke. Without hesitation, Pannekeet sprang into action, quickly coordinating with an audience member to secure a replacement. Within minutes, the issue was resolved, and van der Linden rejoined the band mid-performance, slipping back into the groove as if nothing had happened. The rest of the band, meanwhile, kept the piece alive with professional ease: a testament to their experience and cohesion.

Pannekeet’s bass playing is lyrical yet powerful, anchoring the music with precision. Van der Linden, meanwhile, remains a force of nature: his drumming as inventive, daring, and electrifying as ever. The depth, tone, and power he brings to each piece are unmatched, and the sheer inspiration and emotion he pours into his performance, even at 79, is jaw-dropping.

Even during the solo cadenzas, where each member shines, the chemistry between the musicians is undeniable. The show could not have concluded more strongly than with an encore of Focus III and the masterful Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers! Yes, it would be thrilling to hear deep cuts like Amok in Kindergarten, Clair Obscur, or Theodora Na Na Na live. Perhaps a “deep cuts” show for the die-hards could be the answer. But as a touring unit, Focus remains at the peak of what a live band should be: a celebration of legacy, craftsmanship, and sheer musical joy. In , they remind us what it means to truly play—with heart, skill, and an unshakable connection to their art.
