Italian bassist Lorenzo Feliciati returns with his eighth studio album, Groove First, a self-released project that lives up to its name. The core concept of the record is a celebration of rhythm, with nearly every track featuring a different master drummer, each a powerhouse in their own right.

While drumming titans like Gergo Borlai (Scott Kinsey) and Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Stick Men) are featured, the album highlights a roster of exceptional players. For instance, Gianluci Palmieri’s drumming on “Next #2” provides a haunting foundation for a track rich with low-frequency textures, spatial soundscapes, and stellar guitar work by Davide Aru.
The album’s sonic palette is impressively diverse, moving through various moods and styles. Feliciati’s compositions are, as the title suggests, built primarily on groove rather than melodic storytelling. This focus on rhythm doesn’t diminish the harmonic richness but instead emphasizes a deep appreciation for the sound and feel of each piece.
From the atmospheric “Oslo,” with its expressive rhythms from Roberto Gualdi, to the up-tempo virtuosity of “Wrong Cable,” driven by the incredible bass grooves and fills of Gianluca Pellerito, the album showcases a range of rhythmic exploration. Tracks like “Spicy As Wasabi” feature Niels Voskuil (Richard Hallebeek Project) seamlessly blending steady mid-tempo grooves with creative tom explorations.
Feliciati is joined by an impressive lineup of guest musicians. Richard Hallebeek delivers two beautiful solos on the opening track, “Morning Wow.” Other notable contributions include piano and keyboard work from Alessandro Gwis and Aidan Zammit, saxophone from Gianni Vancini, and percussion from Martin Verdonk.
The final two tracks, featuring Pat Mastelotto, are the most experimental, especially the beautiful closer, “Lights,” which incorporates the choir Flowing Chords and Margherita Flore on the Coro.

Feliciati composed all ten tracks (with “Lights” co-written with Flore), handled the arrangements, and contributed additional synthesizer work alongside his superb bass playing.
Ultimately, Groove First is a true sonic pleasure, a testament to Feliciati’s skill as both a composer and a player, beautifully captured by Giovanni Pasquetti’s excellent production. It’s a rhythmic journey that expertly balances a collective of incredible talent while keeping Feliciati’s artistic vision firmly at its core.
